LG Sangnam Library collaborates with ‘the National Education Center for the Visually Impaired, which was established by the Seoul National School for the Blind, to provide specialized education in visual literacy and to run the “Saturday Jumbo Class,” a program where visually impaired students can study and enjoy activities with their peers.
The term “Jumbo” is an abbreviation of the Korean words for braille and assistive technology. This program is designed especially for students with visual impairments who attend mainstream schools rather than schools for the blind. Through a well-structured curriculum—including braille (English, math, Korean), information and digital literacy (braille notetakers, screen readers, AI coding, computer use), core school subjects (English, math, Korean), and physical education (showdown)—students are supported by professional teachers and volunteers to build self-directed learning skills.
By participating in the Saturday Jumbo Class, students gain access to personalized education not available in mainstream schools. They develop clear academic goals and aspirations while engaging in peer activities that encourage openness, confidence, and personal growth through the program.
During school vacations, the “Jump Up” intensive course is offered. This two-week (10-day) program supports students in mainstream schools who may lack experience with assistive technology or digital accessibility, as well as new students at the Seoul National School for the Blind. The program focuses on strengthening their information literacy and assistive technology skills.
